Rockstar Rodrigo

Alongside other up and coming young female musicians, Olivia Rodrigo has made a name for herself in the industry quicker than most. Her first single, “Drivers License” was an immediate smash success and sent her straight to the top of the charts. Then of course, her pop debut album Sour did as well as any artist could hope for. Now, with her most recent album and tour, Olivia Rodrigo takes a step away from pop and into the world of rock.

The next generation of young popstars are stepping up to the stage - pun intended. Sabrina Carpenter is turning into the world’s pop princess, with the recent success of her album emails i can't send and opening for the one and only Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour. Renee Rapp, with her astounding Broadway vocals, is bringing her authentic self on and off stage while touring her debut album, Snow Angel. And now with record-breaking numbers on her first two albums, Rodrigo is taking a turn from her innocent pop image into a more punk-rock sound and performance.

Rodrigo’s story is what the general public often sees as “overnight success”, but many years of hard work have been put in on her part to prove that she is here to stay. Like many others, she has been working towards success and fame since she was a young girl. In her teenage years, she landed the role of Grace Thomas in An American Girl: Grace Stirs up Success and the lead in Disney’s Bizaardvark before moving on to star in another Disney show, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Not too bad!

Similar to so many other stars: Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, you get the gist; Olivia Rodrigo was a part of the Disney machine before making a name for herself. She was nominated and won Grammys for Sour and now has solidified her place in the music industry with her second album, Guts.

After so many years of hard work, when it came time to release her first single, it was an immediate success, sending her even further into stardom. After the success of her first album, many expected the all-too common sophomore slump. But unlike far too many artists, Rodrigo was able to find inspiration and curate a new perspective to bring through her lyrics, vocals, and production in Guts.

Rodrigo took a turn from the softer, innocent vibe from her first album and created a more angsty, pop-punk sound, relaying her growth through her songs. From hits such as "bad idea…right?” and “all-american bitch”, she released her inner anger through her beautifully crafted lyrics and more recently, in her performance on stage.

The Guts tour opened in Palm Springs, CA at the Acrisure Arena, where Rodrigo shocked and delighted fans with her eccentric performance. Her stage presence was so engaging and authentic, fans in person and online couldn't take their eyes off the star.

From her quirky dance routine to "love is embarassing" to her beautiful vocals accompanied by piano as she sings, "teenage dream", there's something for everyone. But without doubt, “Obsessed” is the star of the show. Showcasing provocative choreography and the intense energy Rodrigo exudes as she jumps around the stage, there’s no other word to describe her presence: electric.

And the rockstar in her comes out especially as she approaches the bridge of the song, picking up her guitar and demonstrating her incredible musical abilities. She knows how to use the cameras, the audience, and her voice to create the most captivating experience for her fans.

And the allure of her performance has attracted thousands of fans to each and every show, sometimes drawing in other celebrities. Most recently, she sold out the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City 4 nights in a row. And to make it extra special, she brought some familiar names to the stage as a special treat for her fans. Most notably, Noah Kahan and Rodrigo sang his hit song "Stick Season" - a tribute of sorts to a prior video of Rodrigo covering the song.

She is on the up and up and shows no signs of slowing down, especially as she comes into her new sound. Her music catalog is nothing short of fantastic and has maintained an incredibly loyal fanbase since she first released, "Driver's License". And now with the hair flips, the dance moves, and her intense stage presence, Rodrigo has everything she needs to become the next punk-rock star of Gen Z.
